Bike lane celebration

  • Facade of the bicycle shed Dwaalgebied (11x2m), Tilburg city center.
  • Commissioned by the Municipality of Tilburg, January 2024.

Cycle paths made of red asphalt are characteristic of the Netherlands as a cycling country today. The very first cycle path in this style was constructed in the center of Tilburg in the late 1970s. To celebrate this, cyclists were photographed on this route (in 2023). Noud Sleumer then used the palette of colors of these cyclists and their bicycles to project onto the cycle paths that are visible in photos from the Tilburg city archives. In this way, the memory of that first red trajectory is kept alive in a colourful way.
