Smartphone destructor

  • Anonymous Smartphones and Smartphone Destructor

During his graduation, Noud Sleumer focused on the smartphone. He found that there is a sharp contradiction in this smart device that has penetrated our lives so deeply. On the one hand, it contains a wealth of unique, personal data, on the other hand, it is a completely anonymous object of which we do not know the composition, materials, origin or makers at all. The photos in the Anonymous Smartphones series address this contradiction. On the one hand, they show how we try to protect the user’s private history and, on the other hand, they emphasise the anonymity of the smartphone.

As part of his search for the deeper meaning of the smartphone, Noud Sleumer came up with the Smartphone Destructor. A smartphone that breaks suddenly seems to have lost all value to the user. What we don’t realize is that this seemingly soulless artifact still contains 42 precious materials. But what to do with all that personal data of the user? The Smartphone Destructor destroys all that information and retrieves the components and precious materials for reuse or recycling.
